The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, or CACREP, is the governing body which ensures that graduate programs in counseling meet certain standards in training future counselors. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School Counseling program has been accredited by CACREP, and maintains high standards of training for school counselors. Each of the 8 core areas above provides important insight into the knowledge and expertise the school counselor will need to have.

 

In addition, CACREP states that students who are preparing to specialize as school counselors will demonstrate the professional knowledge and skills necessary to promote the academic, career, and personal/social development of all P–12 students through data-informed school counseling programs, which includes knowledge in the following areas
